#253: Don't Stay

This was the single of the week on iTunes in like June of last year, and it was stuck in my head all day Sunday. It's super excellent. I sing it a lot, trying to emulate her epic bluesy vocals, and never succeed.

#252: Number One

NO IDEA why this is on. I do know that I worked all morning, watched a creepy movie heralded as the most erotic movie of the decade, and went to an amazing potluck at the Penthouse. We had eggplant parmesan and carrot cake AND apple pie and I pretty much lost my mind. Also, I tried apple wine for the first time. Verdict: delicious.

#251: Getcho Soul Together Pt 1 (live)

Um, since this was a full 10 days ago, I don't actually remember why this song got put on, but I know that we were listening to my "birfday" playlist, which I made for my 22nd birthday party, while preparing to go to Real Friend's birthday party, and then it made its way onto my 365. Breakestra is SUPER AMAZING and everyone should go buy their music right now. They are a hip hop orchestra or a funk orchestra depending on who you talk to, but Slacker.com introduced me to them two summers ago and I am OBSESSED.

#250: Still Fighting It

I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW let's not even talk about how I just got 12 days behind, and instead just go back to my beautiful 365.

January 28th: Basically I spent all day moaning about how I can't do math, because people kept telling me that I was bad at math. And then Ben Folds told me to tell them to suck it.

#249: TGIF

Pandora played this for me on a happier day than Wednesday, and for ONCE I was able to give Franzia a song, rather than the other way around. This band is called The Secret Handshake, and this song, "TGIF," from their album My Name in Lights, is super fun. Quite unlike my life right now.

#248: Sunburn

Today was quite the wash. I couldn't get anything done before 4 pm, but since then I have done lots of work AND had a much much better rehearsal than the last few days. So I think maybe I can come out even.

Owl City is this band that Franzia has become obsessed with in the last few days. This particular song, "Sunburn," is apparently from the soundtrack to 90210? Anyway. It's electronica pop goodness. I don't have much yet but I'm delving deeper...

#247: Sink Slowly

Today I woke up and instantly had this song stuck in my head. As in, it was my first thought, before "what day is it?" or "what time is it?" or "have I slept through work?" I literally opened my eyes thinking "Hey, we sink slowly, darling." So today is Virginia Coalition's "Sink Slowly" from Rock & Roll Party.

In other news, Beginning Kayaking is the best class ever. Except that it is so hard to go straight. But I can officially get out of my upside-down kayak. Success.

#246: Hey, Soul Sister

Sunday was a pretty low key day, which was appropriate, given Saturday. Today's song is "Hey, Soul Sister" by Train (yes, Train, of "Meet Virginia" fame). Franzia put this on while I was making nachos and guacamole at 9 (because I'm a grownup) and I'm already envisioning the days and days of killing this with excessive repetition.

#245: Single Ladies (Put a Ring On it)

GREAT NEWS FROM SATURDAY: I PASSED MY ORALS!
While walking to Olin, I listened to "Ego" to pump myself up. Because, you know, I walk like this because I can back it up, and that totally applies to math. Sadly, "Ego" has already had its day on my 365, but we had a big party to celebrate orals ending for me and writtens ending for Franzia, and Beyonce figured prominently in it as well. TC, another math major, actually whipped out a lot more of the Single Ladies dance than I would have ever imagined him knowing. So January 23rd will be "Single Ladies" in order to commemorate the mental image I have of TC whipping THIS out:

#244: Time After Time

I've fallen an entire weekend behind! But don't worry. I'm all over it. Also, did you know that PCC offers a class called "I Can't Do Math"?

So in the one act I'm directing, the main character listens to several songs while moping about his break up, and one of them is "Time After Time." After singing it in rehearsal on Thursday, I had it stuck in my head all day Friday. It's a pretty embarrassing song to get caught singing to yourself.

#243: I'm a Cuckoo

I realize that it is technically no longer the 21st, but I was busy doing my awesome logic homework. Logic is the best.

Today's song is "I'm a Cuckoo" by Belle & Sebastian, from Dear Catastrophe Waitress. Basically I was listening to a genius playlist (based on Of Montreal) while mostly working on homework and wondered to myself why I had never listened to this song before. And here we are.

Two days until orals... it's too bad I've already used "The Final Countdown." Maybe I'll use "Chariots of Fire" if I pass. Or something horribly depressing otherwise.

#242: Exo-Politics

Is it seriously only the second day of the semester? I'm already forgetting things I had to do, and it feels like it's been an eternity since I was well-rested. Second rehearsal today! Blocking is harder than I remember. Also, reasons this semester will be a mess: I have ALREADY forgotten a meeting with a professor.

I've already changed my mind about this. I was going to have today's song be "Time is Running Out" by Muse, but then I was listening to more of their songs and changed my mind. I like this one more.
So today is Muse, "Exo-Politics," off of Black Holes and Revelations. Franzia put on "Time is Running Out" while I was getting ready for a meeting, and then tonight, while writing this, I started listening to more Muse, and decided that "Exo-Politics" is better. I'm a big fan of Muse, but only recently. Are these even words? Bleh. Back to math.

Previously.

#241: That's the Way Love Is

I've been debating making this blog for a while now, but on the inaugural day of my final semester at Whitman, I've decided that now is the time.

This particularly excellent gentleman known as Franzia told me about his 365 playlist a few years ago, and I have since made one entire playlist, and am currently about 2/3 of the way through my second. The rules are flexible, but here's my version:
Put one song on the playlist every day. No repeats. It should be the song I listened to the most that day, or the song I discovered that day, or the song I had stuck in my head that day, no matter how embarrassing.
This has on several occasions led to the addition of Disney songs to my 365, and it is precisely why I no longer put it on in social situations.

They're now my two favorite playlists, and I put them on probably 75% of the time I'm listening to my own music. They're also crazy, because progressions happen like "Call On Me" being followed by Pedro Almodovar at the age of 22 (when he mistakenly thought he could sing), followed by Sly & the Family Stone, then "Afternoon Delight." I usually listen to it on shuffle, and it's just as random as listening to it in order.

This particular 365 I started on May 24 2009, and it will end on my graduation day, May 23 2010.

Anyway, today, January 19th, the 241st song is "That's the Way Love Is" by Marvin Gaye. It's the title track off his 1970 album. I put "If I Could Build My Whole World Around You" by Marvin & Tammi into Genius and iTunes, in its infinite wisdom, thought that if I enjoyed Marvin Gaye, perhaps I would enjoy some more Marvin Gaye? I hadn't listened to this particular song in... I don't know how long. Maybe ever? Certainly never before on this computer, so at least 2 years. And I immediately stopped making myself lunch and added it to my 365.

Also, just because I need to cherish these moments when I still have time to make myself meals, I'd like the world to know that I had chicken cordon bleu and roasted acorn squash for dinner. HOW CLASSY AM I?
